About this item

Widespread industrialization and mass production at the turn of the 20th century generated concern that traditional technologies and crafts would be lost. This concern fueled the Arts and Crafts movement of the same period, which was popular in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The Deerfield Industries, a cooperative association of craftspeople produced handcrafted, useful objects for the home. Chauncey Thomas made this hand-thrown glazed redware vase around 1910. He lived in Deerfield from 1910-1912, and served as vice-president of the Deerfield Industries.
