About this item

This photograph was created by Frances and Mary Allen, of Deerfield, Massachusetts. When both sisters lost their hearing and had to stop teaching, they turned to making a living as photographers and published several catalogs of their prints. This example, “Girl with Dulcimer,” was listed in 1914 and 1920. The subject is shown seated by the hearth in the kitchen of the Allen home located on the Deerfield street.  She plays an Appalachian mountain dulcimer.
