About this item

Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail (1903-1981) was from Montana, and a member of the Crow nation. This necklace, with its turquoise and blue beads, elk teeth pendants, and speckled beads held special meaning to her. Crow women wear beads symbolic to each female elder. The speckled beads are medicine beads, used to identify her as a nurse. Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail attended the Franklin County Public Hospital of Nursing in Greenfield, Massachusetts, Class of 1927.
