About this item

Orland Ware kept a store in Deerfield, Massachusetts.  Pictured are pages from his “daybook,” or “waste book.” The date appears at the top of the page and all the transactions are recorded for that day, both debit and credit. Later, the information would be transferred to an account book, organized by customer. On the left-hand, or “debit” page would be listed what was purchased with values.  The right-hand, or “credit” page would be for recording the methods of payment – cash, goods, or labor.
