About this item

Will Hutchins was a painter and teacher at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The Greenfield Arts and Crafts Society, which voted him president, was part of the national Arts and Crafts Movement that promoted handicrafts in an increasingly industrialized country. Here, the Greenfield society emphasizes its participation in a show in Boston. The Arts and Crafts Movement’s first major society in America was Boston’s Society of Arts and Crafts, founded 1897. Boston remained the center of the movement until the late 1910s, when it began to lose market to New York and elsewhere.
