As with other academies, it was customary to hold academic examinations at the end of each quarter at Deerfield (Massachusetts) Academy. Parents, trustees, and townspeople were invited to hear the students display what they had learned. This invitation is printed on the back of a playing card (Jack of Diamonds). Often a ball followed the serious part of the day, such as this one held at Mr. Cooley’s Hall. Oliver Cooley (b. 1772) had a tavern license for a building in Deerfield from 1809 to 1816, a site that was the home of taverns and hotels from 1805 to 1935.
