About this item

General Benjamin Lincoln signed this paper giving twenty-five rations of bread and meat to Matthew Gillche on February 4, 1787. Gillche was a member of the government militia that was fighting against Daniel Shays and his Regulators during Shays’ Rebellion (August1786- February 1787.) Gillche was probably receiving rations for his company while they were quartered in Petersham, Massachusetts. The government militia arrived in Petersham on the morning of February 4, after an overnight march through a snowstorm.
