James Wells Champney was a prolific genre artist who studied in Boston, Paris, Antwerp, and Rome before settling in Deerfield, Massachusetts. He taught art at Smith College from 1877 to 1884, and illustrated his wife Elizabeth Champney’s literary works. She first published in 1873, just six months after they were married.
