About this item

These petroglyphs are carved into the rock at the Great Falls (Bellows Falls) located on the west side of the Connecticut River in Vermont. Abenaki people have used the Great Falls for gathering and fishing since ancient times.  Over the years, the numbers of carvings reported by observers has varied considerably as early ones disappeared. In the twentieth century, the integrity of the original carvings have suffered from being re-carved, enhanced, and/or painted yellow.
