About this item

Photographers Frances and Mary Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts, took artistic photogaphs, often of children. The sisters posed their subjects doing activities intended to recall scenes from a pre-industrial past when many believed life was simpler. Magazine editors  often commissioned them to provide photographs for publications such as House Beautiful and Country Life in America and it was hoped that urban readers would view these images of country children playing outside as positive scenes of healthy and wholesome recreation.
