About this item

Frances and Mary Allen of Deerfield, Masachusetts, photographed these children amusing themselves by blowing soap bubbles with a clay pipe.  The sisters were uniquely female in a male-dominated art form and were characterized further by taking primarily artistic and often nostalgic, rather than documentary photographs.  Their work was popular during the national Colonial Revival Movement, when an increasingly industrialized world inspired many to remember fondly a simpler past.
