About this item

A photographer documented this ice harvesting demonstration at a pond in Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1973. The horse is hauling three blocks of ice up the ramp. An ice grapple is hooked into the last block which will be steered by an ice hook. The laborious practice of ice harvesting for year-round use at home and for export continued throughout the 19th century until artificial ice machines made the industry obsolete.
