About this item

The hotel atop Mt. Sugarloaf in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, was built in 1864, and survived into the mid-20th century. In 1908, the original structure was enlarged and surrounded by a large porch. The hotel boasted expansive views in all directions and attracted middle-class Americans with new-found leisure time. It was fashionable and believed to be important for one’s health, to spend time outdoors, enjoying the fresh air.
